Christmas buffet at Stewords Riverboat Singapore

Christmas buffet at Stewords Riverboat Singapore
It's Christmas day! Wishing all my online friends a very merry christmas, fa la la la la, la la la la!

And so, we went out with the fam bam to enjoy a Christmas buffet at the Stewords Riverboat. Mum pre-booked the tickets for this session online, as she's visited the riverboat for a dinner session before that came with live music and really enjoyed it, so she wanted us to also have this experience (how sweet <3).

This place is at Marina South Pier, which is easily accessible by taking the train to Marina South Pier MRT Station (circle line, yellow line).

Honestly, we didn't know it'll be exactly next to the MRT station. We drove there and couldn't find parking space (very limited parking spaces) which were full by the time we got there at 11.45am.

Our lunch booking was at 12pm, don't like to be late, so we were abit worried about not getting there on time, should we have to wait for a parking lot. Hence we drove to the next available carpark (super spacious) Marina Bay Cruise Center and took a 5 minute sheltered walk along the walkway leading to the pier.

We didn't know that there were people who actually fished there, flew drones or attempted having a picnic there, as it was so hot with little shade from trees.

If you follow me on instagram (@janelkuuu), you would have seen some 'interesting' sights I posted on my IG stories! So if you haven't followed me already, click on the hyperlink above and please do! :)

Here we are! At our lunch location.

All in all for $42++ per person (lunch, adult),we were able to enjoy a sumptuous Christmas buffet spread which features a live carving station of beef ribeye, lamb and christmas turkey, live pasta booth which served up a pretty good Singapore chilli crab pasta as well as other christmas western delights and desserts galore! What I liked about it best was also that there were free tastings of wines & craft beers available!

The packaged buffet meal came with a selection of one wine / beer or juice to pair alongside your buffet meal, and of course, we beer-ed it, especially when it was Heineken on tap.

There was also a pop-Up Christmas Cocktail Bar, where you can make your own Christmas-sy cocktails such as the classic Snowball and Christmas Mojito!
At the beer tasting booth, I tried all 4 beers and 1 cider, and I have to say my favourite 2 of the lot both came from the same brewing company: Bridge Road Brewers. I've just started learning how to appreciate craft beers and I must say I now like beers so much more than wine (sorry not sorry).

This one I'm holding is the Bridge Road Bling IPA (ABV 5.8%), a flavoursome IPA with subtile citrus undertones. Pretty smooth and easy to drink, with mild carbonation. Hence = my style.
Another one I liked, is the Bridge Road Robust Porter (ABV 5.2%), which tasted stronger because of its deep chocolate and coffee flavours. Nice and slightly closer to stout, I could also taste a little citrus in there. It was pretty smooth too and I enjoyed it, with what feels like moderate carbonation.

 Desserts galore, woohoo!
Creamy pumpkin soup - pretty delectable!

6 Pasta choices available:
Carbonara Cremoso in Grana Padano Wheel
Aglio Olio
Classico Beef Bolognese with Meatballs
Squid Ink with Seafood
Singapore Chilli Crab
Laksa Genovese

We liked the Singapore chilli crab one the most!

Unfortunately, my sister didn't like the crepes, because it wasn't the true blue crepe, you know, the thin type. I didn't get to try the crepes but I went for the desserts instead.
Had the desserts from the dessert bar - I have to say I do think their cupcakes are pretty good, although poor ol' Rudolph here looks like he had been hit in the nose and was left bleeding.
 LOL.
Before I forget, I also want to mention the carvery station, which offers 3 types of meat - the beef ribeye, turkey and lamb. I didn't take the lamb because we're not that into it, but the beef (with the Truffle Mushroom Gravy) and turkey were good. The turkey turned out to be pleasantly tender, which we didn't expect, especially from a buffet spread.
Just had to acknowledge their christmas decorations, it was too pretty not to have taken a photo with!
Went up to the third floor of the boat (buffet was on the first floor, which was the only floor open for lunch). There was no one, and it was pretty warm up there, but it offered nice sea views, including one that overlooked the Marina South pier and Marina Bay Sands, which can be seen from a short distance away.

We really enjoyed the time spent together in this meal, despite half my family members ended up feeling seasick due to the rocking motion that came with eating on a boat. My mum and I were the only ones with stronger stomachs, it seemed. haha.

Everything You Need to Know about Wedding Bouquets
Planning for your wedding?

Then you might already be feeling the excitement to look for your bridal bouquet knowing that this can add style and elegance to your final bridal look.

Remember how your bridal gown and bouquet should match each other? That means you'll really have to spend time comparing your options first before you finally come up with your wedding bouquet. But how important a wedding bouquet is? Do you really need to carry a bouquet for this occasion?

The Importance of a Wedding Bouquet

Yes of course you should be carrying one!

It's an important item that a bride should have for this unforgettable occasion, the bridal bouquet! This idea had started in the Roman times wherein it symbolizes fertility. Romans and Greeks also believe that the scent of the flowers can keep them away from evil spirits. In fact, after the ceremony, the newly-wed couples eat the herbs to heighten up their sexual desire. However, as time passes by, carrying a bouquet became part of wedding fashion instead. Flowers are also known to give out a message because flowers have their own representation and meanings. They consider it to bring good luck to the couples.

It is a tradition for the bride to toss the bouquet after the wedding. Though this is a much-awaited moment, it is no longer a tradition these days. Yet, it doesn’t take away the fact that women would still want to have a wedding bouquet for this special day. They even spend a lot of time looking for the best flower arrangement to suit their gown.

To make it easier for you to find the perfect bouquet for your wedding day, it is best that you take advantage of the internet where you can find lots of images of different flower arrangements. You don’t have to go for an expensive bouquet just to amaze your guests because you can already find stunning wedding bouquets that you can have at a cheaper cost. Some Singapore florists even provide discounts to their customers which is something that you should look for.

Carrying a bridal bouquet definitely makes this occasion complete. It doesn’t matter if you will go for an expensive or a cheap bridal bouquet because you can still look stunning knowing that flowers are always a sign of beauty and elegance. There is plenty of wedding bouquet ideas that you can choose from so it is best that you start your search as early as possible from florist online. You can even make your own bouquet as long as you have all the things you need and you also have an idea what type of arrangement you really want.

Rejection does hurt like a b.

Rejection does hurt like a b.
Dear readers,

Hey, I'm back. Kinda. For this post I'll be deviating from my usual review posts and share an update on what's been going on these few months that I've been inactive on the blog.

Obviously, you all know I'm probably going through some stuff - emotional stuff that has left me in turmoil. The extremely quick summary is that I fell for someone, and when I decided to confess it to him, he rejected me. This is the first ever confession I made in my 30 years of living on planet Earth, and my first ever romantic rejection.

Yes. my first. Because I never felt strongly about anyone to have done so before. And because I never met anyone I thought was special enough to have done so too. When I thought about it, I realise I've always been rejecting others and not allowing them to come into my heart or know me as a person. Ever since I've had my heart broken 10 years ago, I never considered dating anyone else because I felt people were all the same. I rejected some people who wanted to date me and never ever regretted it, I also always somehow manage to end up dating guys who only wanted to date me for the wrong reasons, and then I rejected them too in the end.

Then I stayed happily alone for the next couple of years, happy of my existence of being a single girl until he came along. For this confession, honestly, I thought i have prepared myself well for it - the negative answer, the no-response and all. And even when I thought I did, it didn't feel enough. It still hurt, and it hurt really bad. Maybe because I thought we clicked, I saw the possibility in us being best friends (and then more), maybe because I saw us enjoying time together for a long long time in the future. But it was all a one-sided view of things, a view of an imaginary relationship I had that came crashing down as I received the resounding  'no'.

Yes - if you were wondering, I did it through text. Some of you might think it's stupid - but that platform felt right for a certain reason after much consideration and some things that happened, and I don't care what the relationship experts out there say about it. Everyone's story and why they do certain things a certain way is unique. And even if I texted my feelings, i meant every single word i said in it. The emotions are as true as me saying it in real life. I didn't just text a whole blob of emotional word vomit, but I just simply told him how I felt and that if he didn't feel the same I would just back away.

But what I got was a resounding no. Actually I've thought about it in depth. My gut feeling is that he did get some confusing mixed signals from me as well, because I am totally crappy at showing my true self especially when I realise I have feelings for someone. I feel that there's been a gross misunderstanding of who I am because of some things that happened that I never had the chance to clear it up with him properly. And I confessed before getting a chance to do so, so really, I guess I nipped my own chances in the bud.

But it's fine - rejection is after all part of life. I spent hours thinking if I should have done it. I don't regret it, to be honest. After all, I really don't like to play mind games - I like things honest and straightforward. That's just me. Yeah even with all the jitters. I just wanted to set things straight about how I felt. I really trusted this person and I let him into my heart. I guess I wanted him to understand why I reacted in a certain way but I forgot that not everyone can take that much honesty. Perhaps it felt to him that I was burdening him?

But you know, I am thankful to him for this experience, no matter how it went down. He awoken me to things within me that I had been sweeping under the carpet all these years - giving me courage to face my inner demons and confront them. I know, you're thinking, dayum son, it's just a rejection, why does it sound so serious?

There are many layers to this. Rejection is also self-reflection time. I had to learn that I cannot keep beating myself up for it, and I learnt this the hard way, because I poured over it quite a bit, wondering if there was something wrong with me. I used to constantly sweep my emotions under the carpet, burying it, tucking it away and pretending that everything is okay and I could move on. After many years, the constant buildup and denial of facing it head on had created a roadblock for someone else to come and know the true me. And really, that was what's wrong with me. I allowed my inner demons to take over my emotions for so many years. I needed to solve that and be right with myself so that I can allow the right person to come into my life and feed off me too. I knew i needed to be right with myself for the right person to enjoy me, as a person, in future. It's never too late to learn about yourself - we've only got this life to live, I'll use it for God's glory.

What's sad about this is also because I feel our timing seemed off. When he was ready to get to know me, I wasn't ready. When I was ready, the moment for him has passed on, perhaps. I was really disappointed... our timing was a total crap fest. It hit a wall, and when things hit walls, we can either choose to stand still and attempt futility in breaking through that wall, or be redirected so we can move on. I guess it's the same for us. I dont know how he thinks now but honestly I hope I can still be friends with him, I never want him to feel bad for turning me down because everyone has a choice for themselves. No one is in the wrong. (Except cheating. Cheating is a big no-no for me).

I cried, I was disappointed, I went to smash things at the Fragment room for relief, but it didn't do me any good. I was mourning over a 'what could have been'. I also thought to myself, what if I would never get back this friendship I thought could have been a special one.

One night I came across this song, and when i listened to this song, i suddenly imagined God was singing it to me. I started replaying it over and over again. Honestly, nothing's better than reminding yourself that God will never let you go. I close my eyes and imagine God is hugging me as I listen to it - telling me to let go of my doubts - my doubts for a better future, a better everything. Because He won't ever let me go. He's the only one who loves me and cares for me. All I have to do is to believe in Him. The promises of God are Yes and Amen.

But I'm still trying to learn to let go of this whole thing. Harder because sometimes I bump into him, yada yada, not important. What's important is that I need to know that the rejections that I face are, perhaps, the close to a chapter in the story of my life. But also know it's not the end. And it's a super bitter pill to swallow. It's not even about the embarrassment, but the fact that I look at him and know that I still like him but he doesn't feel the same way, I guess?

But I'm lucky, right? Doing it over text and him still nice enough to reply me properly to tell me 'no'. Sometimes some of us don't even get proper closure from things we decide to let go - but receiving an outright rejection? That's a cold hard door slam in your face. That in itself feels like you've been officially denied access to what you think is the best path for you at that moment in time, and at least the person gave you no reason to hang on because he just wasn't interested in even trying anymore. But I trust that God put it in that person's heart to reject me, for He is redirecting me. Seeing the rejection as a redirection of paths also worked for me. Some times I still feel emotional about it, sad about it - but I won't allow it to conquer me and put me down. I realise through rejections, you really also start to learn that your heart is very strong. It's being exercised and trained, if I may.

Our emotions are the hardest to control, and I still think about him. I'm not totally over him. But rationally speaking, if a person doesn't like me enough to choose me, how can I allow him to have power over my emotions? I'm still in this sort of emotional conflict but I know time will heal. One day, I still hope to laugh and talk to him, to be his friend.

Rejection is very painful and does hurt like a b, because it feels like a part of you has been lost and I guess we need time to mourn all of that. But to my friends who are also in this phase, I hope you can also allow God to comfort you, just as He had, for me.

Let God comfort and let time heal. :)

I Won’t Let You Go - by Switchfoot (Feat. Lauren Daigle)
When it feels like surgery
And it burns like third degree
And you wonder what is it worth?
When your insides breaking in
And you feel that ache again
And you wonder
What's giving birth?
If you could let the pain of the past go
Of your soul
None of this is in your control
If you could only let your guard down
You could learn to trust me somehow
I swear, that I won't let you go
If you could only let go your doubts
If you could just believe in me now
I swear, that I won't let you go
I won’t let you go
When your fear is currency
And you feel that urgency
You want peace but there's war in your head
Maybe that's where life is born
When our façades are torn
Pain gives birth to the promise ahead
If you could let the pain of the past go
Of your soul
None of this is in your control
If you could only let your guard down
If you could learn to trust me somehow
I swear, that I won't let you go
If you could only let go your doubts
If you could just believe in me now
I swear, that I won't let you go
I won’t let you go
I'll always be by your side
Yeah
If you could only let your guard down
If you could learn to trust me somehow
I swear, that I won't let you go
If you could only let go your doubts
If you could just believe in me now
I swear, that I won't let you go
I won’t let you go
(I won’t let you go)
There ain't no darkness strong enough that could tear you out from my heart
There ain't no strength that's strong enough that could tear this love apart
Never gonna let you go
Never gonna let you go
No I won’t let you go

BIODERMA Sébium Mat Control and Lotion Review

BIODERMA Sébium Mat Control and Lotion Review
Look what came in the mail today!

It's a sample size of the Bioderma Sebium Mat Control and Lotion!

If some of you don't already know, my skin type is combination skin. Now, let's first talk about the Lotion. I use this after cleansing my face, and after application to my skin, loved how it was non-sticky and moisturising in the right amount (you know how some toners can dry your skin out)

I learnt that this product is also specially formulated for Asian skin and contains a blend of active ingredients that helps balance skin’s pH, reduces excess oil and keeps skin hydrated. Lovely!

After using the lotion, I shook the mat control moisturiser bottle well before squeezing a bit out to try. I read how some people who just squeezed the product out from the bottle can experience a runnier product. But anyway, after shaking it well before use, I didn't experience anything like this.

Because it also acts as a makeup primer, I'm happy that I can save a step! You can either wear this on a bare face (without foundation) or just use this underneath your makeup. When I use it as a makeup primer, I find that it doesn't crease on my face! And like the others who tried this product, mine was a positive experience!

I liked how this moisturiser is light in texture, and absorbs easy for me. Importantly, no sticky feeling because hey, the last thing you want living in a tropical humid climate is a sticky face!

This product is formulated with the 8-hour Mat & Smooth Technology, which claims to produce instant, deep down results and regulates shine with ingredients like zinc and vitamin B6, refines skin texture and tightens pores with keratolytic active ingredients and astringent, and limits the appearance of blemishes.

The Fluidactiv patented complex biologically regulates sebum quality and provides lasting protection against blocked pores.

This product is said to be suitable for people with sensitive to combination to oily skin. It's also paraben-free, hypoallergenic, fragranced, non-comedogenic and dermatologically tested. In fact, even as the Sensibio line of products are formulated for sensitive skin types, it is safe to use on all skin types as well. Sébium is formulated for oily skin types and Hydrabio is formulated for the dry or dehydrated skin.

If you have these problems, this product is probably worth a try for you, as it's targeted for people with these concerns: Acne, Large Pores, Oiliness and Blackheads.

There are 3 factors that affect skin's sebum, which this product helps with:

Factor 1 – Hormones
  • Imbalances and changes in hormonal activity can result in the excess production of sebum
  • Risk of qualitative sebum abnormality
  • Having thicker sebum that has a more difficult time flowing out of the follicle, which increases the risk of clogged pores and pimples
  • prevents damage to skin immune system and preserves antioxidant reserve

Factor 2 – Improper Skincare
  • Using skincare products that are not suitable for your skin can irritat and worse acne-prone and oily skin
  • For example, the use of aggressive cleansing products can lead to skin barrier issues, pH instability and reactional hyperseborrhea, where skin produces even more sebum to compensate for the removal of all the sebum from skin’s surface

Factor 3 – Lifestyle
  • Diet and stress are some factors that can influence the production of sebum
  • For example, a high-glycemic diet (sugar, flour, rice etc) and high stress levels elevate hormones that increase the activity of sebaceous glands, contributing to the formation of acne
Skincare Tips:
  • Be patient and stick with a targeted treatment programme, using products from a dermo-cosmetic range that’s created for oily, blemish prone skin
  • Depending on the person and the type of acne, improvement is generally observed
Bare face testing!
How to use

Bioderma Sebium Mat Control: Squeeze out a sufficient amount and apply on skin in an outward motion. Can be used as a makeup base. Avoid eyes and lips. For best results, use together with Bioderma Sebium Lotion for optimal shine-control and hydration

Bioderma Sebium Lotion: Pour onto cotton pad and sweep across skin in an outward motion, or pour onto palm and pat into skin with fingertips. Avoid eye and lips. For best results, use together with Sebium Mat Control for optimal shine-control and hydration

These new Bioderma products will be available island wide from 1 June 2018 at all Guardian outlets. The Bioderma Sebium Mat Control will be retailing at $36.90, 30ml and the Sebium Lotion will be retailing at $33.90, 200ml.

Review: Atopalm Real Barrier Extreme Cream (Tested in 2 climates!)

Saturday, 21 April 2018

Review: Atopalm Real Barrier Extreme Cream (Tested in 2 climates!)

As some of you already know, I live in hot and humid Singapore. I was actually wondering if this cream would be good to use in such a humid place in Singapore, and I’m one to dislike heavy-weight creams, causing like a greasy wet film over my skin that doesn’t dry or gets absorbs easily into my skin.

But yet, my skin requires the moisturising so it gets really irritating when I can’t seek a balance in this aspect. So, I was not sure if I’d accept this cream from Atopalm at first but decided to when they approached me as I’ve heard some good stuff about it.

Thank goodness I did – and I’m not saying it cos it was given to me or anything. In fact, I did a test of this product in 2 different environments, which I’m going to share very shortly.

Before I start though, FYI, my skin type belongs to the normal and combination type, as some of you who always read my beauty posts know already. Remember how I say you all should always start off with a patch test first for every beauty product, right? Please do so, because it’s always safer to do that. Different people have different reactions to certain products, so even if it’s claimed by many to be safe, you have to make sure its essentially suitable for your own skin type, okay!

Okay, enough with the preaching, you guys know this far too well already, right?

First climate test: hot and humid Singapore

I perspire a lot, and I hate it when my cream doesn’t get absorbed fast enough (especially in the mornings when I’m rushing off to work). I usually rush through my morning routine because I’m such a sleepyhead that I wake up just in time to get prepared for work - usually within 30 minutes.

Summary – the cream passed the test. It was moisturising and yet contained the right amount of moisture for this climate. It absorbed fast and I was able to apply my makeup very quickly (usually I let my creams rest on my face for 5 mins or so: absorption time). Totally comfortable and hydrated, I would continue using this cream in Singapore!

2nd climate test: dry and cold Korea

Honestly, I’ve tried many creams in my multiple trips to Korea in their cold weather. This cream was one of those which truly got absorbed quickly. Many times I thought that I was underapplying because the film left on the skin was so thin that I wondered if the amount I used was actually really enough to protect my face (due to the harsh harsh winds I encountered in Jeju). Normally my skin would be rough and start to flake a little by the 3rd day that I’m in Korea, but throughout my trip (which saw me using this cream) – NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. My skin was not rough nor did it flake even a little. I was very pleased, seriously.

What they claim:
“This rich cream was developed for those who require serious skin care. With long lasting moisture benefits that are derived from a combination of specialty ingredients, it helps to repair a damaged skin barrier.”

I don’t have the professional tools to test if they were really repairing my damaged skin barrier or not, but all I can say is that it did provide me a good balance I was looking for in my moisturiser.

I was also quite glad to read further into the ingredient list and find that they have this patented ceramide complex and an MLE skin barrier formula which recreates skin compounds and structure similar to real skin, thereby strengthening weakened skin barriers and also being able to extend the moisturising effect up to 72 hours.

That said, it doesn’t mean you should only apply the cream every 72 hours, since you’ll definitely be washing your face and all within the day, right? Haha!

Anyway, this cream (under the ‘Real Barrier’ line) was previously only exclusive to the US only. But now, you can try this out for yourself by getting it from Watsons Singaporeretailing for SGD$44.

The packaging comes in a clinical looking white plastic jar (not as pretty as the other brands you find out there, but not forgetting what it contains is ultimately the most important!). You’ll have 50ml worth of content per product.

Also, did I also mention how this formula doesn’t contain a lot of the bad stuff they put in cosmetics and skincare out there?

Here’s the list: Ethanol / Propylene Glycol / Mineral Oil / Phenoxyethanol / PEG / Artificial Fragrances / Benzophenone / Diathanolamine / Artificial Pigments

I read that some people say the scent of this product is dreamy and nice smelling, but strangely I wasn’t able to smell anything when I used it leh! Is it my nose got problem? HAHA.

Overall, I did enjoy using this product. In fact, I only wrote this review AFTER I finished the entire freaking bottle (I actually got this bottle some time ago, but was so sorry to the sponsors who were waiting for my review to come out because I wanted it to be accurate for you guys!)

Mainly, I do approve this product because my skin did flake less and was not that dry as when I visited Korea with the other moisturising products. So, yes, love it, get it people!

If you want to find out more about this product, get details on its official USA website here.

SG BusLeh: Great app to accompany your bus travels in Singapore

SG BusLeh: Great app to accompany your bus travels in Singapore
Today, I'm going to share on an awesome transport mobile app that I've been using for my travels around Singapore by bus! Some of you might already have been using it, yes, it's the SG Busleh app!

This app, launched in 2015, was developed by Originally US, a Singapore-based mobile app development consultancy in Singapore. One of the goals of the app makers was to make it fast, simple and easy for their users, hence the layout is a very simple layout, with colour adaptation of Singapore's colours: red and white, as per our flag.

Currently, almost 6% of total Singapore population uses SG BusLeh at least once every month. The app was also featured in Channel Newsasia as well as Channel 8, and has also won the 'Most Innovative Solution' award from LTA (Land Transport Authority Singapore) in year 2016.
Personally, before they approached me to do this post for them, I am already on of the app's avid users. I use it almost everyday and to be honest, one of my favourite features of the app is to check the timings of the buses I'm trying to catch. I also like how they have a notification alert to inform you that the bus you searched for has arrived, even after you've locked your phone! How cool is that!

When I search for the bus I’m trying to catch, for example, bus 100, it opens up with the entire route list of bus 100. As I click on the bus stop which I’m at, it also shows me what other buses are available at that bus stop, as well as their arrival timings.

Here’s a scenario for example, when I’m trying to get to Tampines Interchange from Ubi Station Exit B, I know I will be taking bus 22. I click on the location ‘Ubi Station Exit B’ to check what time bus 22 will be arriving, but I see another bus 65, which will be arriving in 2 minutes time, instead of waiting another 10 minutes for bus 22. I can easily refer to bus 65’s bus timings as well to change my bus route.

And this is another feature I appreciate very much because I might want to catch another quicker bus that might also take me to the same destination, just in case I’m rushing for time. This app also localised itself further by tuning the language of the app to prompt Singlish jokes!

This is not surprising, since it is after all, developed by a Singapore mobile app development consultancy.

Some other unique features in their app that I like are:
  • The app shows exact location of upcoming buses on a map, instead of relying on just bus timing views. They call this ‘bus stalking’, haha!
  • The type of arriving buses (double-decker bus or bendy buses, etc)
  • Ability to tap your EZ-Link card to check balance using SG BusLeh (on supported devices)
  • If you are on a bus, the app can notify you when you are arriving at your destination stop
  • Internal bus timings for even NTU & NUS buses!

As one of the top mobile app developers in Singapore, Originally US fully in-source their development and focus on talents, going through as much as 30 to 50 resumes to hire one developer. Clients include insurance giant AIA, River Safari, Mediacorp, CPF and Zalora, which I also use for my clothes shopping! haha.

Overall, I like that the app is straightforward, and useful, easy to manuver and it's easy for even older folks (like my parents) to pick up.
If you're interested to try out the app (or excited to start using it, like I am!), you can download it on the Android playstore here or the Apple Store here.
