나주 동곡식당 (Dongguk Shikdang): Flower Crabs Specialist

Tuesday, 1 December 2015

Dongguk Shikdang (동곡식당) is situated somewhere along the road from Naju to Gwangju. It is pretty impossible to come here without having to drive or take a taxi.

The prices stated were also very attractive.

This eatery specialises in cooking flower crabs, and it became pretty crowded right after we settled down. To try most of it, we ordered the full set, which costs about 20,000krw per person.

The side dishes were delicious, and so was the flower crabs. We tried the 꽃게탕 (flower crab soup), 양념게장 (marinated crabs) and 간장게장 (Raw Crabs Marinated in Soy Sauce).

I have no idea how to eat the crab dishes, but my local friend told me to just bite down on it and suck the heck out of it, because the crabs are already cut into bite-possible sizes. If your crabs look too big, you can consider crushing the hard claw with the back of your utensils, which might help minimise damage on your teeth.

These dishes are usually eaten with rice. Koreans refer to 간장게장 (Raw Crabs Marinated in Soy Sauce) as a “rice thief” (밥도둑), because you'll finish the rice in no time, along with the juicy roe in the crab.

For meat lovers, their also sell the dishes like grilled pork and raw beef dish (육회), so you can order that as well. I can't assure the taste though, because I haven't ordered it before.

But if you love flower crabs and want to try how the Koreans actually like theirs, you can consider visiting.
