[South Korea, Seoul] So, we’re finally at Uncles Tteokbokki a.k.a Uncles 엉클스! They are an eatery selling tteokbokki / Korean spicy rice cakes in a comfortable setting. They were also the year 2014 award winner for ‘The Best Brand of the Chosen by Consumer’! (Grammar a little wrong leh, award organisers.)
Anyway, I researched a few Korean food blogs before getting to know of this place, so I can safely say that it isn’t that touristy yet! Most customers here were Koreans when we came here about 3pm, during non-peak hours.
We were at the Sinchon branch, which might be a little difficult to find, for those who aren’t very familiar with Korea’s streets. Came here because this is the original store before the other branches opened.
Feast on this! The dish has a long name: 오징어 꽃이 피었습니다! (6800 won)
The name is very cute because it follows a popular Korean game (무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 (The Rose of Sharon is Blossoming)), which is played in the fashion of "What is the time now, Mr Wolf?"
So the name of this dish is The Octopus is Blossoming! Here's the romanisation of the dish's name: Oh-Jing-O Kot-shi Pi-os-seum-ni-da.
You can choose your own spiciness level. Here’s how they explain the spiciness level to you: via the spiciness level of Shin Ramyeon instant noodles.
First level of spiciness = 2 x the spiciness level of Shin Ra Myeon
Second level of spiciness = 4 x the spiciness level of Shin Ra Myeon
Third level of spiciness (oh-ho!) = 100 x the spiciness level of Shin Ra Myeon!
Order the cheese version, you’ll see the cheese melt before your very eyes.
Eat together!
The crispy octopus, mixed with cheese and their specialty tteokbokki is sheer happiness!
SHIOK!
Overall, it was a wonderful, filling snack (or meal, for some others). Best be if you go with a friend or in groups, as the portion is for minimum two people to enjoy. When I come back to Korea, I will definitely come here again!
