Pies & Coffee

Right smack in the bustling heart of Orchard Road is Pies & Coffee, a vibrant cafe that was born in year 2011.

About Pies & Coffee...
A combination of soups, stews, breads and dessert, a pie is essentially a self-contained meal that can be eaten from the hand without the need of cutlery, crockery or napery; consumed hot or cold at any meal; on-the-go or as a sit-down meal, and can be either economical to extravagant.
When we reached the place, we were greeted by nice, simple decor. It's a nice place to chill out. For those who wants to people watch, sit on the outside (non-air conditioned) part of the cafe.

Surroundings:

Our pies contain mainly good fats (non-hydrogenated vegetable fat), not-so-good fat (saturated animal fat from meat) but never any bad fat (hydrogenated fat). We believe in using only fresh and high quality ingredients. We don’t believe in artificial colourings, preservatives or flavourings. This applies to our pastries and fillings. We hope you can taste the difference!
YAY to healthier pies!

Pies:
Christmas Turkey Pie ($60 for whole pie, big)
A comfort to your tummy through the festive season, feast on their Christmas Turkey pie which contains grilled garlic turkey, pumpkin, apricots and whole chestnuts summered in chestnut cream sauce!

The Shepherd's Minced Beef Pie and The Shepherd's Black Pepper Chicken Pie ($48 each for the whole pie - big)
The minced beef pie is really substantially stuffed with peas, carrots and minced beef. This classic shepherd's pie is a lovely pie to have for those who are used to the regular dish, but personally, I like the Black Pepper Chicken version slightly more as it was more flavourful in terms of its fillings.

The Shepherd's Black Pepper Chicken Pie boasts of chicken chunks, carrots, celery, green and red peppers, potatoes and onions in this stew-like fillings and is more juicy and interesting to have! Those who likes the taste of black pepper will find this a better choice than the regular minced beef pie.

Steak & Nacho Cheese Pie
I loved the top layer cover of this pie, which is really cheesy and nice to have. It is also filled with tender, savoury steak pieces to make it on of the top choices of their pie range.

Chicken Curry Charcoal Pie
Huh? Chicken curry and charcoal? This is the most interesting dish I've had tonight. At first, I had thought this pie was squid ink instead of charcoal, when first served. The server explained that as chicken curry is very strong in flavour, the charcoal balances out the flavour of the pie so that it is not that overwhelming. And they were right!

This pie was made in conjunction with Singapore's National Day and because it was so popular, it ended up being in the permanent menu. :)

Wagyu Beef Cheek Pie
One of their best sellers, this pie will leave you wanting more of it! This pie stuffed with tender quality Wagyu beef is a definite delight for pie lovers!

Quiches:

Santa's Turkey Quiche and Rudolph's Mushroom Quiche ($24 each for whole quiche)
Stuffed with smoked turkey ham within, the Santa's Turkey Quiche is baked in a rich savoury egg custard. But it'll be better if the flavour of the smoked turkey ham is a little stronger, as the egg custard tends to overpower the ingredients within.

This goes for the Ruldolph's Mushroom quiche as well. I love mushrooms but the taste of mushrooms was faint and I did hope the ingredients can emerge stronger for this dish.

Others:
Thai Drumlets
These Thai Drumlets are marinated with turmeric and is slightly spicy. Its lovely taste lingers in your mouth even after you've swallowed the chicken meat. I do recommend this for chicken lovers as the marination of the meat is quite special.

Croque Monsieur
Honestly, when this was served, we all went 'wow'. Not like the typical Croque monsieur, this meteoroid-like sandwich is a lovely dish to have while not scrimping on what the regular Croque monsieurs have to offer.

Sunriser (part of the Breakfast menu)
Part of the breakfast/brunch menu, this interesting baked pie creation contains homemade truffle mashed potatoes, cheesy chicken sausage and topped with a full mid-runny egg! I would definitely order this if I'm there for brunch!

Lobster Bisque Baked Rice
One of my favourite dishes here. The seafood ingredients - fish and mussels - used were fresh and huge, and you'll not regret this choice as you chomp down on its baked rice which is deeply flavoured with lobster bisque. :)

Desserts:
Merry Cherry Pie ($6.90)
This pie was so nice! Cut it open to unravel their use of full cherries within the pie. Tart is made with almond cream and tastes good with the mix of cherries.
The pie goes so well with a top up of vanilla ice cream, which I highly recommend to you!

Festive Nutty Pie ($6.90)
I'm not exactly a nuts person, so when I was given this to try, I was a little hesistant. However, the nuts were very well baked into the pie and I ended up eating quite a bit of this (to my surprise!). It is a shiny combination of pumpkin seeds, pecans, almonds, hazelnuts & pistachios with an overall glaze of caramel on top.

Classic Fruitcake ($55 for whole cake)
This classic christmas dessert is mixed with lots of dried fruit like figs, apricots, prunes, orange peel, red & green cherries with almond toppings and is definitely the must-have choice for those who simply love fruitcake! The entire cake is available for purchase at $55.

Winter Berry Log Cake ($55 for whole cake)
This light log cake is a good finisher to a heavy meal. The sponge cake within is orange vanilla flavoured. Using red fruit berries and crispy almond nougatine, this almond flavoured log cake will make your day!

Choco-Holly Fantasy ($55 for whole cake)
I loved how they stuffed marshmellows within the cake sponge, which added more texture to the entire chocolaty combination of dark chocolate ganache, caramelised hazelnuts, walnuts, macadamia & rum! A lovely cake to have for the Christmas season.
