Does Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Dye Work on Dark Asian Hair?

Hey y'all! I have finally tried Lime Crime's Unicorn Hair Dye on my Asian dark brown hair! (and yes, my hair is unbleached. So a proper chance for the results of this hair dye to prove itself!)

I bought it and had it shipped over to Singapore using my ComGateWay account. Each bottle costs about USD$18 (SGD$24.50).

As you all know, I have a really damaged set of locks. I need to explain that I'm also extremely busy to even visit the hair salon due to the partial lockdown. The black haired me is once again revealing itself at the roots, leaving hair colours which provide a good platform to test this hair dye on both black and dyed golden brown hair.

One reason I'm drawn to this product is simply for the fact that they used vegan ingredients with no ammonia, peroxide or bleach content within the product. Which is great for me because my hair condition isn't already in its greatest.

Once opened, a laboratory scent hits me pretty swiftly. This is their description of the smell though:

"Unicorn Hair is hyper-performance hair dye from Lime Crime that leaves hair feeling silky-smooth and smelling like a flower meadow."

Flower meadow? Really?

Not in the gardens I'm used to. The scent pointed toward chemicals, but one that I can, thankfully, accept. In fact, I kinda liked the smell after a while (weird alert).

Each bottle holds 200ML of product, to be honest, I thought it sounded pretty little, but you know what, it turned out to be a lot of product for one very big head (mine) with thick hair (also mine).

Lime Crime suggests to use 1 jar (thin or thick hair) for short hair (bob style) . To be honest, one jar still felt a little too much for my hair below the shoulder. My hair length is until my chest area, FYI.

I can't imagine using 2 jars on my hair. lol.

For this, I also don't recommend using it if you happen to have an injured scalp or pimples on scalp. It will hurt like you never knew pain before, as with all other hair products that go on injured scalp.

I mixed these 2 equally (half bottle each to get one bottle worth of product) since I was targeting to get Steel Blue hair.

Overall: It had left my hair end slightly frazzled and dry, but I had compliments on the turnout of the  hair colour, which wasn't steel blue, but an ashy green that peeked out in sunlight conditions.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting my hair to absorb the blue dye at all, because blue (to be honest) is one of the hardest colours for Asian hair to absorb without any bleach. Our dark pigments totally repel the colour, so really, I think the overall colour left me pretty satisfied.

How to use:
Apply to clean, unconditioned hair, massaging into each strand.

Full Coverage: leave in for 30 minutes (no heat/cap needed).

Tints: Leave in for 45 minutes. Rinse until water runs clear, shampoo & condition as usual. To extend the life of your color, use shampoo for color-treated hair in between colorings.

It allowed me to pose confidently even with a visible pimple below my nose HAHA

Everyone's hair is different, texture also plays a huge part in the absorption and turnout of the colour, I believe. In fact, I believe that the healthier your hair texture is, the better the absorption. Mine, well, it pretty much absorbed well because I left it on for at least 2.5 hours to 3 hours (did that because I didn't have bleach and my hair pigments are naturally dark, you know, Asian).

Depending on your dyed hair type, results will vary, and probably be difficult for you - a.k.a uniquely your own special hair colour.

Lime Crime also advised that on dark brown hair, colour will show more as a tint, like how mine turned out. If you want, you should go for the full coverage shades like Chocolate Cherry, Blue Smoke, Leeloo, Jello, Pony, Anime, Valentine, Aesthetic, Chestnut, Squid, Charcoal, and Sea Witch.

FYI - I'm totally going to get the Squid colour next, it looks super gorgeous!

Here's the important question: Would I buy this for my hair again?

3 weeks after dyeing my hair with this product, the colour had mostly faded off, but still very much retained its shade as a super light tint on my hair. For non-bleached, Asian hair, I must say this worked out quite alright. So you know what?

Yes. I would buy this for my hair again. Only for the fact that the flexibility of me being able to play around with the hair dye colours makes me very curious how my hair would turn out with the other colours. Especially since my supposed 'steel blue' turned out to be a kinda ashy green on me. However, if you're looking for the product to deliver on lastability, this probably won't make the cut. But if you're one of those who has probably bleached your hair, it'll definitely perform better in terms of both lastability and colour delivery.
