Is Nong Geng Ji 农耕记湖南土菜 the New King of Hunan Cuisine in Singapore?

If you're craving for some Hunan cuisine, you might want to check out Nong Geng Ji if there's a branch near you.

Nong Geng Ji at Changi City Point Singapore

During weekdays, this place gets pretty busy during lunch hours, serving up dishes to the many folks working in the Changi Business Park area.

Walking into Nong Geng Ji, I noticed the ambience was quite nice, though it felt a tad too familiar—almost like another trending Hunan food joint, Xiang Xiang Hunan Cuisine 湘香湖南菜. In fact, it was so similar (even down to the menu design) that I overheard another customer asking if the two restaurants were affiliated! The cashier was quick to deny any connection though, haha!

I saw a lot of people ordering the prawns with vermicelli, and while I love vermicelli, I had to skip it this time since I was on a low-carb diet.

Nong Geng Ji boasts 6 signature dishes:

  1. Stir-fried pork with abalone and chili
  2. Big shrimp with vermicelli and garlic
  3. Stir-fried beef with tea oil
  4. Stir-fried kampung chicken with tea oil
  5. Signature grass fish fillet with chili

We decided to try the signature grass fish fillet with chili and one of the recommended dishes, beancurd skin with egg, to balance out the spicy and non-spicy flavors.

Heads up: the fish dish we ordered had bones in it, so if you’re going for that, be cautious!

I was really hoping to try their pan-seared green chillies with century egg (because I’m a huge fan!), but my dining partner doesn’t do century egg, so that was a no-go for us this time.

We also ordered the stir-fried cauliflower, which had a bit of spice to it.

The portions here are generous and great for sharing, and the food came out promptly, which is always a plus. Most dishes are on the spicier side, but there are some non-spicy options available too.

Also, I recommend ordering rice to go with your dishes, as they tend to be on the saltier side.

My favorite dish from the three we tried was definitely the cauliflower dish! It was flavourful and cooked nicely.

The other dishes were decent, but I wouldn’t say they were particularly memorable.

So, would I come back?

...maybe?

If I do head back, I will probably be there to explore other dishes, especially the meat options.

Also, if you prefer Nong Geng Ji, they also have free membership you can join (just give them your handphone number). That will give you some discounts.

Overall, if I had to choose between Nong Geng Ji and Xiang Xiang, I’d still lean towards Xiang Xiang.
