18 Mexican food places in Singapore to try: A compilation for mi amigos!

Hola! If you've only ever tried Mexican food from Stuff'd, amigos, you are missing out.

First up, why is Mexican food so awesome?

Well, just check out that colour! It's vibrant, unique and super flavourful. I'm basically just laying Mexican food culture out for you. Vegetarian (or not), its dishes are always packed with a punch of spices, seasonings, often resulting in an awesome visual feast for the eyes.

Their seasonings are an awesome treat for the palate, and honestly their cuisine goes so well with a refreshing mug of beer (at least for me).

Craving for spice? You got it. The Mexicans can do spice, lemme tell you that.

They love their chillies, and it's prevalent in alot of their dishes. There are 64 varieties of chillies in Mexico (!). You're probably familiar with some, such as the Tabasco, habanero, Serrano and Jalapeno, which are commonly used in their dishes.

All chillies are measured by the Scoville scale, the higher the amount of capsaicin within, the spicier it gets.

Our local chilli padi (also known as Bird's Eye Chilli), usually measures a maximum of 250,000 on the Scoville scale, while a habanero can go a maximum 350,000 on the Scoville scale! It's the hottest chilli in Mexico.

I also love how healthy it is, because it's usually laden with healthy ingredients such as avocados, limes, beans, tomatoes. Meat and vegetables? You got it in there too. It's the perfect mixture of the necessary nutrients you probably need, which is basically protein, vitamins and minerals.
Mmm, already feel like tucking into some of the Mexican goodness?

No need for gracias, I've pulled a list of Mexican food places in Singapore, where you can feast at with your friends, without regret!

18 Mexican food places in Singapore to try:

1. Vatos Urban Tacos (KoMex)

36 Beach Rd, #01-03 South Beach Quarter, Singapore 189766
A fusion of Korean and Mexican, they have a nice atmosphere, and the service was friendly. However I do think that the comfort of their seats can be improved, after all people do wish to stay longer to enjoy their drinks. Overall it serves as a nice hangout place, and their happy hour (till 7pm) offers a 1-for-1 beer.

Recommended to try:  Baja Fish Tacos, Craft Beers, Mango Shrimp Quesidilla, Kimchi Carnita Fries, Tequila Chicken Wings, Makgeolitas

2. Afterwit Mexican Taqueria (Halal)

778 North Bridge Rd, Singapore

Afterwit was inspired by an afterthought of pairing Mexican-influenced fare with an indie cafe experience. Given a dearth of halal Mexican options, Afterwit's a halal mexican place that has established itself amongst those who love spicy flavours.

Recommended to try: Chicken & mango quesadilla, pulled beef, cod tacos, nachos

3. James’Quesadillas &brunch
Maxwell Road, 7 Amoy St, #02-79, Food Centre

Sitting in the heart of Tanjong Pagar, and located in Amoy Food Centre, they have one of the most affordable prices for Mexican food in Singapore. Yet, they manage to keep to the quality of a restaurant, so get there and get queuing, because they sport a queue. Weekends and public holidays are rest days, they open daily on weekdays (Mon to Fri), mainly in sync with the working crowd in that area.

Recommended to try: Quesadillas, Salads bowls

4. Lower East Side Tacqueria (TexMex)

19 E Coast Rd, Singapore 428746

This Texmex restaurant is a Mexican-inspired eatery in Marine Parade, that sports a wide variety of craft beers, drafts on taps, cocktails and wines. Couple that with a laidback atmosphere with Latino beats in the background and you're up for a nice chillout session with your friends. Happy hour beer deals run all night.

Recommended to try: Tacos, Burritos, Nachos, Margarita, Craft Beers.

5. Lucha Loco

15 Duxton Hill, Singapore 089598

Lucha Loco is a casual and vibrant Mexican cocina and garden bar serving contemporary Mexican food and quality tequilas, located on 15 Duxton Hill. Their menu is developed by Executive Chef Mario Malvaez in collaboration with Chef Jason Jones, co-founder of the hugely popular Mexican restaurant Mamasita in Melbourne and currently a Director of The Loco Group. Outside seats available, and highly recommended.

6. Café Iguana

30 Merchant Road #01-03 Riverside Point

Founded in 2000, Cafe Iguana is 20 years running and still going strong. And you know that's a good sign for a restaurant. Situated by the Singapore River, around Clarke Quay, sitting at the outdoor patio is highly recommended to soak in the atmosphere. They use only the fresh ingredients and serve a wide variety of drinks – from craft beer to agave tequila and mescal. Free flow nacho chips offered (free!) with drink orders.

Recommended to try:  Jalapeno Poppers, Tacos.

7. TONITO Latin American Kitchen

78 Airport Blvd, #02 - 248, Singapore 819666

Located in Changi Airport's Jewel, this restaurant sports some awesome views of the jewel falls. While it's classified a Latin American restaurant, they offer a wide selection of Mexican Tacos and Quesadillas. I also love how they cook their Chili Con Carne (Spanish, meaning Chili with meat), a popular Mexican American stew. They make it with Cotija Cheese, topped with corn. The restaurant's head chef is also Chef Daniel Chavez, the co-owner and chef of OLA Cocina del Mar and TONO Cevicheria.

Recommended to try:  Chili Con Carne, Tacos, Quesadilla

8. Baja Fresh Mexican Grill Singapore

9 Bras Basah Rd, Rendezvous Hotel, Singapore

Baja Fresh Mexican Grill pioneered the concept of casual Mexican dining in Singapore almost 7 years ago. This eatery is fashioned as a casual dining place, and I always love to come here to get takeaways, before heading upstairs to enjoy the food in Teo Heng, where I karaoke the night away with my friends. Servings are huge, and generous.

Recommended to try: Quesidillas, Burritos, Nachos

9. Señor Taco (Blk A)

3A River Valley Road, #01-07 Clarke Quay, Block A

It all began in Clarke Quay 2009, with Señor Taco’s signature item “Tacos al Pastor”, fresh pork marinated in a special recipe of herbs, and spices. The restaurant imports fresh ingredients and chillies from Mexico, and owns a tortilla factory in Singapore, to ensure the best fresh corn and flour tortillas in the country. Señor Taco is the first Taqueria to open in Singapore at Clarke Quay in 2009, serving Mexican-style street food such as Tacos and Quesadillas with a variety of fresh and spicy salsas.
