SG BusLeh: Great app to accompany your bus travels in Singapore
Today, I'm going to share on an awesome transport mobile app that I've been using for my travels around Singapore by bus! Some of you might already have been using it, yes, it's the SG Busleh app!

This app, launched in 2015, was developed by Originally US, a Singapore-based mobile app development consultancy in Singapore. One of the goals of the app makers was to make it fast, simple and easy for their users, hence the layout is a very simple layout, with colour adaptation of Singapore's colours: red and white, as per our flag.

Currently, almost 6% of total Singapore population uses SG BusLeh at least once every month. The app was also featured in Channel Newsasia as well as Channel 8, and has also won the 'Most Innovative Solution' award from LTA (Land Transport Authority Singapore) in year 2016. 
Personally, before they approached me to do this post for them, I am already on of the app's avid users. I use it almost everyday and to be honest, one of my favourite features of the app is to check the timings of the buses I'm trying to catch. I also like how they have a notification alert to inform you that the bus you searched for has arrived, even after you've locked your phone! How cool is that! 

When I search for the bus I’m trying to catch, for example, bus 100, it opens up with the entire route list of bus 100. As I click on the bus stop which I’m at, it also shows me what other buses are available at that bus stop, as well as their arrival timings. 

Here’s a scenario for example, when I’m trying to get to Tampines Interchange from Ubi Station Exit B, I know I will be taking bus 22. I click on the location ‘Ubi Station Exit B’ to check what time bus 22 will be arriving, but I see another bus 65, which will be arriving in 2 minutes time, instead of waiting another 10 minutes for bus 22. I can easily refer to bus 65’s bus timings as well to change my bus route. 

And this is another feature I appreciate very much because I might want to catch another quicker bus that might also take me to the same destination, just in case I’m rushing for time. This app also localised itself further by tuning the language of the app to prompt Singlish jokes! 

This is not surprising, since it is after all, developed by a Singapore mobile app development consultancy. 

Some other unique features in their app that I like are:
  • The app shows exact location of upcoming buses on a map, instead of relying on just bus timing views. They call this ‘bus stalking’, haha! 
  • The type of arriving buses (double-decker bus or bendy buses, etc) 
  • Ability to tap your EZ-Link card to check balance using SG BusLeh (on supported devices) 
  • If you are on a bus, the app can notify you when you are arriving at your destination stop 
  • Internal bus timings for even NTU & NUS buses! 

As one of the top mobile app developers in Singapore, Originally US fully in-source their development and focus on talents, going through as much as 30 to 50 resumes to hire one developer. Clients include insurance giant AIA, River Safari, Mediacorp, CPF and Zalora, which I also use for my clothes shopping! haha. 

Overall, I like that the app is straightforward, and useful, easy to manuver and it's easy for even older folks (like my parents) to pick up.

Chinese New Year is inching in on us, and every CNY is accompanied by the prosperity toss (a.k.a Lo Hei Yu Sheng 捞起鱼生)! 

Not sure where you're headed for Lo Hei this CNY? Or in need of more suggestions of where to get your Yu Sheng platters?

This Chinese New Year, toss to fortune, abundance and health with Greendot’s affordable vegetarian yusheng (S$28). For the first time ever, the brand has come up with a vegetarian yusheng — this delicious offering suits all palates and dietary requirements. It is made with konnyaku salmon slices, which replicate the look, texture and taste of the fish. It is also accompanied with soy bak kwa and pomelo - relish the invigorating interplay of savoury, sour and sweet notes. Homemade fruit-based sauce and vegetarian oil imbued with the fragrance of lemongrass is drizzled all over the yusheng for the final finishing touch.

Plentyfull Blossom Yu Sheng is inspired by the flavours of South Thailand and North of Malaysia. With reminiscence of kerabu flavours, pineapple and Thai ginger dressing was used for refreshing and mix of flavours. This year, cured Yellowtail Hamachi is the ring that binds the delicious matrimony of flavors. Some vegetables used in this Yu Sheng includes Green Papaya, Beetroot, Watermelon Radish and topped with fried yam strips and micro cress.

SENS is helmed by Chef Kent Seah, who has over 22 years of experience, trained in Japan and worked in various five-star hotels and restaurants. This year, SENS is launching a very colourful fruity yu sheng! Bucking the trend of showcasing only vegetables, the Healthy Salmon and Fruit Yu Sheng (S$48, small) features up to 12 different types of fruits. Each fruit offers a refreshing bite and accompanying the fruits are thick slices of salmon sashimi. Also available is the Eight Happiness Gold Rush Yu Sheng (S$68, large). It stars the same 12 fruits as the marquee ingredients, and comes with added indulgence such as sword fish, ama ebi, Hokkaido scallop and salmon sashimi. The pairing of fruits with sashimi may seem a bit odd at first, but it is one that works remarkably well. Both the yu sheng are pulled together by a sweet homemade plum sauce by SENS. Olive oil is used instead of peanut or corn oil for a healthy spin. Five spice powder is not used in both yu sheng, allowing the ingredients¹ natural flavours to shine through. This yusheng is available from 15 January to 3 March 2018.

Nadai Fujisoba Ni-hachi’s (Fujisoba), touted as Japan’s number one soba restaurant, is the first in Singapore to introduce yu sheng that comes with cold and fried soba noodles. This healthy and delicious yusheng caters up to 8 pax. It also features a generous medley of salmon, seasoned octopus, seaweed and jelly fish, crabstick strips, shredded egg and tobiko for a savoury note. The sushi gari (ginger), orange cubes and winter melon strips offer a refreshing taste, while the white and red carrot, purple cabbage, Japanese cucumber and Chinese crackers a crunchy bite. A special sesame sauce pulls all the ingredients together. This will be available from 16 January to 28 February 2018.

It will be a rewarding meal to remember with this exquisite creation by Master Chef Goh. Taking centrestage is a ‘flower’ with ‘petals’ that are made of julienned peaches, plums, kiwi and golden kiwi. Prettily perched in the middle is a mound of pomelo, wasabi tobiko and red tobiko. Encircling this beauty are nuggets of ingot-shaped osmanthus jelly studded with blueberries, as well as edible viola petals. Accompanying the main attraction are romaine lettuce, rocket leaves carrot, green radish, white radish, yellow frisee lettuce, snow pear, pine nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds, shredded fish ‘ribbons’ and two sauces – Japanese sesame and plum. This will be available from 29 January to 2 March 2018.

Guests will be treated to double the luck as they ‘lo’ (toss) to greater fortunes while dining on this colourful platter by Master Chef Chan Hwan Kee of Min Jiang. The eyes are first drawn to a beautiful Chinese painting on the plate – personally illustrated by Chef himself – of a friendly Pekingese perched on the foothills of a majestic mountain, and pretty cherry blossoms beckoning on the peak; then to the gorgeous sunset-hued arrangement made up of ultra-fresh raw salmon slices and abalones crowned with red tobiko. To complete the work of art, edible viola petals and wasabi tobiko lend a 3-D touch. This coming Chinese New Year, Peach Blossoms presents the new, Japanese-inspired Amaebi, Salmon and Pear Yusheng. Apart from the usual yusheng ingredients, Bonito flakes are added for umami flavour, while for sweetness, fresh Japanese sweet prawn is added. Tobiko is included to give a semi-crunchy texture to the dish, and pear is thrown into the yusheng to provide the palate a refreshing taste. This Yu Sheng is available from 22 January 2018 to 2 March 2018.

Burger King's Largest Mega Fast Food Restaurant is Open in Bedok!
Last Tuesday, Burger King unveiled its latest and biggest outlet in Singapore and the region at Heartbeat@Bedok. Spanning a wide space, the fast food restaurant holds up to 239 seats!

The all-embracing design of the restaurant unifies various elements of a Singaporean lifestyle, with the circular layout taking inspiration from the two ‘chambers’ of Heartbeat@Bedok that resemble a human heart.

The expansive seating area is organised into different thematic sections, which cater to individuals and large family gatherings alike, and a well-planned quiet study corner equipped with electric plugs for students to huddle over academic pursuits and revision for upcoming examinations.

Human-centric features are evident in the thoughtful furnishings of the new store. Customers stepping into the 5,281 square feet space will immediately notice the vastness of the restaurant and have their attention captured by the many surprising elements of the restaurant including a beautiful ‘Super Tree’. It represents Singapore’s reputation as a Garden City and its citizens’ love for nature, and breathes a second life into the beautiful wooden frame used to form the installation.

Millenia Walk's Reunion Lunch: 11 food places here to get your CNY started!
Visited Millenia Walk for an awesome reunion 9-course luncheon, alongside over 50 media guests and influencers, right smack in the middle of the mall! We were served with a variety of delicious dishes, starting off with a lovely Yu sheng (cos, CNY! WOOHOO!)

Some of you might following me on instagram (@janelkuuu) might have already seen my instastories with the hashtags: #milleniawalk and #reuniontoremember , and seen some of the delicacies we've enjoyed at this event.

The scrumptious meal features Lunar New Year specials including Plentyfull Blossom – Yu Sheng with Yellowtail Hamachi from modern brasserie Plentyfull, and Oyster and Hotate Katsu from Saboten, newly launched artisanal 68% Ghana Single Origin Dark Chocolate ice-cream from The Dark Gallery.

Well, let's begin the feasting, shall we?

The Bean Shop by
Millenia Walk, #01-52

Tried their Caramel and Raisin hand brewed filter coffee, which is a mellow type coffee. Their basic's single origin coffee from Brazil, hand brewed on the spot. I loved it so much I drank 3 cups of it.

The Bean Shop by is Singapore’s first specialty coffee bean-only retail store which allows coffee lovers to shop a curated selection of freshly roasted coffee beans from over 20 top cafes and roasters around the world, including Melbourne, Tokyo and Canberra.

We also tried 3 Sparkling Sakes (provided by Kirei Japanese Food Supply) during the event: Akane Sparkling Sake (7.5%), Akazaru Sparkling Shochu (5%) and the Shirayuki de Ai Sparkling Sake (7.5%).

We loved the Akazaru Sparkling Shochu and the Shirayuki de Ai Sparkling Sake! It was so addictive, I swore I could have finished the entire bottle super quickly!

Joe & Dough

I tried the pineapple tarts and citrus & mixed seeds butter cookies by Joe & Dough Pineapple Tarts. The pineapple tarts feature buttery pastry hugging a filling of pineapple jam mixed with coffee-infused cranberries. Each tin costs $25. The Citrus & Mixed Seeds Butter Cookies ($23.80) is a sweeter treat with sunflower, pumpkin and melon seeds mixed with orange peels. A pretty interesting mix that lives up to its name of a CNY cookie. Those who visit Joe & Dough can also try their pastries and cakes, which I love as well. Ah yes, probably get a cup of joe at this cafe as well.

We enjoyed a healthier style lohei yusheng from Plentyfull: Blossom Yu Sheng with Yellowtail Hamachi! Everything at Plentyfull is made from scratch with the freshest seasonal produce sourced from farmers and artisans locally and internationally. By day, it offers a market table luncheon spread where guests can mix and match their meals; by night, it transforms into a modern brasserie.

The Plentyfull Blossom Yu Sheng is inspired by the flavours of South Thailand and North of Malaysia. With reminiscence of kerabu flavours, pineapple and Thai ginger dressing is used for a refreshing mix of flavours. The vegetables include green papaya shred, beetroot shread, pretty watermelon radish and topped with fried yam strips and micro cress! Cured Yellowtail Hamachi was used to complement their Yu Sheng flavours.

elemen 元素 offers a wholesome meat-free dining experience that benefits your health without compromising the earth’s sustainability. Today we got to try their 5 Elements Soup 元素五行汤 as well as the Charcoal Beancurd w/ Golden Oyster Mushroom 金蚝菇伴竹炭豆腐. These two dishes were really delish and we enjoyed it thoroughly!

The “5 elements” refer to the soup base which comprises five different ingredients – Burdock Root, Carrot, Shiitake Mushroom, Radish, Radish Leaves. This is a nourishing dish which includes rare and healthy ingredients like Snow Lotus Seed, Bamboo Fungus, Chinese Golden Fungus and Red Dates. Also, we scrapped the sides of the coconut 'bowl' clean and there was so much coconut flesh along with the soup to be enjoyed!

As for the Charcoal Beancurd w/ Golden Oyster Mushroom, another lovely take on fried beancurd! This one is homemade, deep fried and served with asparagus, golden oyster mushroom, served with their special miso gravy drizzled on top. A really delectable dish which most of us enjoyed!

Tokyo Chopped Salad

This salad was not normal. It was super delish! This is the premium beef tataki salad from Tokyo Chopped Salad, which is also the first chopped salad brand in Singapore. Their unique Japanese inspired dressings are specially crafted by award winning Chef Teppei Yamashita.

Tokyo Chopped Salad uses premium ingredients such as the Wagyu Beef Tataki for the salads, promising quality with every scoop. This salad is made up of premium ingredients like Wagyu Beef Tataki tossed with Shitake, Mushrooms, Red Onion, Broccoli, Snow Peas, Wakame, Quinoa, Brown Rice and Romaine Lettuce, then topped off with Sesame dressing! This was so delicious we took some back home as well.

Oyster and Hotate Katsu
Established in 1966, Saboten is one of the largest tonkatsu restaurant chains in Japan. From Saboten, we tried their oyster and hotate katsu dish, which uses Hiroshima plump, juicy oysters and Hokkaido fresh scallops, breaded and deep fried to golden perfection. The oysters were our favourite out of the two.

Teppei Syokudo

If you haven't already heard of Teppei Syokudo, you're late to the kaisendon party! We got a taste of their signature Kaisendon with the famous Teppei sauce. Their Kaisendon has 6 different types of seafood / sashimi mixed with signature sauce, served on Japanese sushi rice, and is not to be missed.

Thai Affair

These Moo Ping Signature grilled pork skewers from Thai affair are juicy and goes so well with its dipping sauce! Thai Affair focuses on simple, fresh ingredients to bring the authentic flavours of Thailand to the table. Only handpicked and freshest ingredients are used, along with Thai herbs and spices, to deliver all-time Thai favourites and tantalizing street snacks.

Uma Uma

Uma Uma served up their Mazesoba Chasiu dry ramen, which is slightly spicy with spring onion, bamboo shoots, leeks and a very pretty looking egg! Mix them all together and you'll have a satisfying savoury bowl of hakata-style noodles, great for lunch time cravings!

Founded in 2004, Beano has been serving delicious and nutritious soymilk and soy beancurd over the years, using only premium certified non-genetically modified beans from Canada. Rich, thick and lightly sweetened, Beano Soymilk contains no artificial flavouring and colouring, and is completely preservative-free. It is freshly made every day. Best of all, Beano Soymilk is double-boiled to retain the nutrients in the soybeans. We tried all the traditional beancurd, grass jelly and ice jelly versions, which tasted so good and yet not overly sweet. So don't miss out on trying this dish!

A lovely ending to the Millenia Walk Reunion Lunch is a single scoop of artisanal dark chocolate ice cream by The Dark Gallery! I love this ice-cream soooo much! This is their newly launched 68% Ghana Single Origin Dark Chocolate Ice Cream! The description of the icecream cannot be more literal than its name already is.

Chances are, if you follow food instagrammers on instagram, you would already have heard of The Dark Gallery or eyeballed it sometime along the way. Its signature goodies are all freshly made using couverture chocolate sourced from gourmet chocolate brands; Valrhona and Cacao Barry, as well as other small-batch bean-to-bar chocolatiers. These tempting indulgences include ice cream, bonbons, macarons, cookies, and hot and iced beverages.
